Pescante e Albert of Monaco at the Forum “Sport and peace”, today the first competitions

Today Alpine skiing competitions in Pila, starting with the Men Giant Slalom, Mountaineering Skiing in Flassin, Saint-Oyen and the Indoor Climbing Qualifications in Courmayeur Sport Centre and the Gran Prix of cross country running.

(Aosta, 20th march 2010). The Winter Military World Games – Aosta Valley 2010 officially began with the Opening in Piazza Chanoux. The message from the President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano preceded by the official speeches and the official opening sentence pronounced by the Chief of Major Defense, the general Vincenzo Camporini. The speeches have been followed by a the parade of the different nations, for Italy as standard bearer, the athlete Giuliano Razzoli, followed by the firing of the tripod.

In the morning the Forum “Sport and Peace” concluded the works with the signature of a resolution between all the nations in attendance to this first edition of the Winter Military World Games of Aosta Valley 2010: “Sport should become a mean of education to peace in all peacekeeping missions under the name of the United Nations and the CISM countries” is the wish of this document, proposed by the president of CISM, the general of the Guardia d Finanza, Gianni Gola, to the chiefs of mission concerning the sport event that will start tomorrow with the first ski competitions.

Our sport events are the only opportunity for military coming from different countries to meet and know each other in an atmosphere of loyal confrontation: this is the best education to peace that we can teach to young soldiers.” “Sport champions can be an example for young people coming from destabilized countries”, underlined CIO deputy president, Mario Pescante. Examples of peace development in difficult territories have been given by the commandants of peacekeeping missions of ONU. Football and martial arts gave a contribution to calm down difficult situation in the Haiti’s shantytowns and in the refugees camps during the Balcan’s war.

Today Prince Albert II of Monaco, who took part in the Forum, communicated officially his support to CISM and he was received by the president of the independent region of Aosta Valley Augusto Rollandin.

Each sport event can communicate a message of peace and tolerance for young people. In the field of military sports these values can be a worthy tool in the operation of peacekeeping in difficult situations” stated Prince Albert. After Rinaldo Sestili’s greetings, Augusto Rollandin called for the return of the World Cup in Aosta Valley after the World Military Games. The Italian athletes gave their best wishes before the beginning of the military championship.

The Olympic champion of Vancouver Giuliano Razzoli, of G.S. Army, declared “only I realize the importance of the Canadian Games. I feel plenty of enthusiasm, I have signed autographs and many people in the street thank me for the joy I brought them. Now even if the season is almost over and the<fuel> is going to finish, I hope to be able to honor this wonderful event working very hard for Slalom and Giant slalom in which I’ll take part”.

The officer of Guardia di Finanza Manfred Moelgg stated:” even though there are some physical problems I am very satisfied for my performances. I am proud of my results in the World Cup and above all for the job done by the Italian Team, that is one of the greatest powers in the Giant Slalom”.

Max Blardone, of the sport team Fiamme Gialle, reminded with regret to fail the great events, but to continue to look for new successes: “I have always looked for victory , but unfortunately in Canada I was not able to stand out against my opponent. Unfortunately it is not always simple to do so, because at the starting line everybody start looking for victory. But I want to improve myself more and more and try to be always satisfied with the ongoing season which brought me in a new dimension through my results. I hope I will grow up professionally and to follow this path a permanent member in the group of the best athletes.” The female athlete for Biathlon Roberta Fiandino from Cuneo of G.S. Army declared: “In spite of the injuries that have conditioned part of my season, I am really proud to have taken part in my first Olympics, my first step to pursue in my growth in such a difficult and fascinating discipline”. Christian Martinelli, from the Carabinieri Sport Club said “I feel embarrassed among all those great champions” But he also underlined the good final season of Italian Biathlon with the De Lorenzi’s second place” and the podium in the relay race during the latest World Cup Competitions.

Gran Prix CISM, successful first cross-country’s test

The winners are Cristina Artuso (Army) and Stefano Scaini (Fiamme Gialle)

The Cross-country Grand Prix CISM took place within the first Winter Military World Games; cross-country was a discipline presented as a demonstrative sport. The race, which covered a distance of 4600 mt for women and of 6900 mt for men, was opened to the FIDAS enrolled.
