Brusson

(Biathlon)

A tourist area, located 1,338 metres above sea level, characterised by a particularly mild climate due to its sunny position, making it particularly appreciated by families: the landscape, which is full of springs and lakes, is the location of easy, pleasant walks.

The name Brusson seems to come from "Bruxeum", the Latin for gold mine, some of which were present in this municipality in the surrounding Lake Frudière and mined by the Salassi. The town seems to have instead built up during the Roman era.

In winter it is definitely the place to be for lovers of Nordic skiing with 70 Km of pistes and a Foyer de Fond equipped for all cross-country skiing services, a structure that hosts important, internationally renowned Nordic ski competitions.

From Brusson you can quickly arrive to the village of Estoul, at the foot of Mount Bieteron, where the descent pistes pass through larch forests and Punta Palasina, in mountain scenery with gentle downward slopes. Many of the surrounding summits are also the destinations of off-track skiing.
But Brusson also offers history and culture. In fact, the town hosts Graines Castle built around the X century by St. Maurice d'Agaune Abbey and surrendered in 1200 to the Challant family.

Not to be missed, on the road leading to Col di Joux, the fountain from which Napoleon supposedly drank in 1800. In fact, Napoleon crossed this hill during the first Campaign of Italy and it appears he escaped being taken prisoner by an Austrian patrol thanks to this fountain, which delayed the Austrians who lingered there drinking its excellent water.
